How to change your life in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

No. 09 — read time 2 minutes

Welcome to The Soloist, a weekly newsletter where I share timeless ideas and insights about life, business, and art.

January was a blur. I'm still collecting my notes trying to make sense of how much things have changed for me.

I launched a SaaS product that sold over $13k in Month 1, my posts on Twitter and LinkedIn were viewed over 1.1 million times, and I've started working on a couple of new projects with people I met online.

The trick? Anytime I feel an instinct to do something, I just go for it.

All the rewarding, exciting, fun, lucrative, memorable times in in my life always came down to following my gut and taking action.

I never had a word for it, I just knew it worked. For me.

Then I learned about the 5-Second Rule.

The 5-Second Rule

Mel Robbins is a lawyer, CNN contributor, and self-help author who gave a TedX talk in 2013 on the power of the 5-Second Rule, which has since turned into a book (you can grab it here).

Mel describes it like this:

“The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it. The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule.”

Mel Robbins

When you feel yourself hesitate before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action.”

This process combats the subconscious mind and uses the principle of motion creating emotion.

It works because:

Building courage doesn't need to be a monumental act—instead think of it like compound interest. Built slowly with many micro-decisions.

Change is always new, uncertain, and scary. Taking action, no matter how small, gets the ball moving.

95% of our decisions are based on feelings, not facts. But we can reframe feelings as suggestions, not absolutes.

You don't need to 'feel' ready to do something. It's the exact opposite. You do something to then 'feel' like you can do it.

Ready to try it?

Hit reply back and tell me what you're going to try the 5-Second Rule on this week.

Don't overthink, count to 5 and hit reply.

Let's go.

P.S. Whenever you're ready, there are 3 ways I can help you:
